Orioles - One is a resident of South and the other is a winter visitor


Indian Golden Oriole, a resident of central and northern India is a winter visitor to Tamilnadu and other southern parts of the sub-continent. In summer it visits west Pakistan and Himalayas. Adult male has a small black eye-patch, golden yellow head and body. Largely black wings with a yellow carpal patch. Female has yellowish -green underparts. Treated as conspecific with Eurasian Golden Oriole. I have photographed this golden Oriole in a village near Kumbakonam in February 2013. Eats insects and fruits like figs and berries.

The Black-headed or Black-hooded Oriole is a resident of southern India. Adult has glossy black head, throat and upper breast contrasting with golden yellow body. Eats insects, fruits and berries, and flower nectar. Photographed at Kollapuli, near Palakkadu, Kerala.
